Blue Heron on Shell Beach, Siesta Key, FL

Blue Heron on Shell Beach was painted in watercolor. Shell Beach is beach access 1 on Siesta Key. It’s located on the north end of the key on Shell Beach Rd, off of Higel Blvd.

Shell Beach is located on Big Pass, looking across to the north end of Lido Beach. Great sunsets are often seen here.

The grayish-blue coat of the Great Blue Heron helps this bird stand out from the crowd. You’re likely to find them along the shore, wading in shallow waters to find their lunch.

Naturally wary of humans, herons are often seen congregated near anglers, waiting for handouts.  No longer seeing humans as a threat, also known as habituation, can be dangerous for both birds and people.

To help protect great blue herons, and other birds, we can avoid feeding them.  And when fishing, always keep bait covered, to avoid attracting birds.
